24K vs 22 carat gold

24 Karat is 99.9% pure gold, used for coins, bars and investment. 22 Carat (91.6% pure, hallmarked 916) is alloyed with metals like copper for durability and is the standard for jewellery — which is why 22 carat always costs less per gram than 24K.

Gold is quoted globally in US dollars per troy ounce and on India's MCX in rupees per 10 grams. Traditional units still matter too: 1 tola = 11.6638 grams. Our calculator converts between all of them at the live rate.

What moves the price

The rupee price you pay depends on the global dollar spot price and the USD/INR exchange rate — a weaker rupee pushes local gold higher even when the dollar price is flat. Import duty and GST are built into the domestic rate; making charges and festival demand add to the final jeweller bill.
